This is a reading and discussion companion and an ongoing online commentary created by Joel Rich.

Elements were originally developed in conjunction with classes taught in the University of Chicago's Graham School of General Studies, Basic Program of Liberal Education for Adults, and at the Newberry Library in Chicago.

The goal of this project is to advance understanding of Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time  by providing materials that facilitate shared consideration of the text.

Discussion is largely unmoderated..

Participation is free and open to all who are in any way interested.

Those who wish to take part in an organized manner are encouraged to do so according to the following plan:

  •    read the complete portion of the original text that has been selected for each session;

  •    read the Discussion Companion selections in each section of the session and any comments that have been made by others
    (Note: section headings are intended to be suggestive of ideas and themes that are inherent in passages, not exhaustive);

  •    as desired, make comments about any selection or respond to comments made by others;

  •    experience images or sounds that relate to the text; read any comments about sounds or images by others; and, as desired, comment or respond;

Comments or suggestions regarding this project are most welcome.
